  • We dedicate this album to the friends serving in the Holy Land, many of whom have encouraged us to record some of the prayers and poems we have chanted at Holy Day observances at the World Centre.

Our deepest appreciation to the renowned Santur player Mr Massoud Missaghian, who accompanied us in most of these selections.

We would also like to thank Mr Jerry Smith for his technical assistance in the early stages of this project.

about

Shidan Toloui-Wallace is one of the most admired contemporary chanters in the Baha’i world.

Shidan Toloui was born in Tehran, Iran, and grew up there until she was 16 when her family moved to Canada. After marrying an Australian Baha’i, Paul Wallace, and adding his surname to hers, she moved to Australia in the 1980s.

Since then, Shidan Toloui-Wallace has chanted at national and international conferences and gatherings in countries including Australia, Canada, Israel and the United States.

“As a Bahá'í I was brought up to believe that music is the food for the soul so to me life without music would be like starving my soul,” Shidan says.

Shidan also appears on Shadi Toloui-Wallace's album "Leather Bound Book", which can be bought from shaditolouiwallace.bandcamp.com

Taraneh Rafati, an internationally renowned Baha’i chanter, grew up in a family who originated from Kashan in Iran, a region known for people with melodious voices.

Taraneh is often invited to chant at Holy Days. A highlight was in 1992 at the observance at Bahji of the centenary of the Ascension of the Baha’u’llah. As her chant rang out over the illuminated precincts of that holy Shrine, several thousand people listened in reverent attention.

“Words should not be sacrificed for the sake of music -- it is important for us chanters to remember that we want to convey the words not the range of our voices.”
